RUSSELL SPRINGS — Maddy Hopkins scored a game-high 30 points while Whitley County fought back from a 16-point deficit to stun Russell County on Monday with a 51-47 overtime win.
Hopkins was red-hot throughout the contest and poured in 11 points in the third quarter (all coming from the free-throw line) while scoring six points in overtime. She finished hitting 16-of-20 shot attempts from the free-throw line.
“Great road win,” Whitley County coach Sean Pigman said. “Kids battled back from being down 16 at the half. Maddy was really good tonight on offensive end. We were solid defensively. We played a really bad second quarter but battled back to get to overtime. Really proud of my kids and staff they never quit and made great adjustments and kept competing. We will enjoy it tonight and then get ready as we play a really good Jackson County team tomorrow night at home.”
Jonna Rice finished with nine points for the Lady Colonels (16-11) while Aubree Clemens finished with eight points.
