Lady Redhounds outlast Jackson County, advances to face Knox Central

CORBIN — Isaac Wilson’s Corbin Lady Redhounds were eliminated by Jackson County during last season’s 13th Region Tournament, and made sure the Lady Generals wouldn’t repeat the feat on Tuesday.

Corbin (21-8) fought back from a double-digit first half deficit to pull out a 56-49 win over Jackson County.

The game saw numerous lead changes as both teams took each other’s best punch.

In the end, Bailey Stewart came up with some clutch baskets while Darcie Anderson picked up a couple of key steals to help the Lady Redhounds secure the seven-point win.

Corbin will join Knox Central, North Laurel and South Laurel in Friday’s semifinal action.

The Lady Jaguars and Lady Cardinals will play at 6 p.m. while the Lady Redhounds will face-off against the Lady Panthers at 7:30 p.m.

Bailey Stewart led Corbin with 16 points, six rebounds and three steals while Darcie Anderson had 12 points and four steals.

Abby Gilbert had a huge game for Jackson County, scoring a game-high 24 points while finishing with eight rebounds, five assists, five blocked shots and two assists.

Corbin connected on 19-of-49 shot attempts in the game while the Lady Generals hit 20-of-40 shot attempts.

Wilson’s squad recorded 16 steals, and forced Jackson County (19-12) into 21 turnovers.

The Lady Redhounds jumped out to an early 9-3 lead and looked to be in control early but that’s before Abby Gilbert got the hot hand to get the Lady Generals back into the game.

Jackson County closed the first quarter with a 7-2 run to cut its deficit to 11-10 entering the second quarter.

Gilbert continued her impressive play in the second quarter. She connected with a 3-pointer at the 5:04 mark to push the Lady Generals’ advantage to 20-13.

A basket by Kylie Clem cut Jackson County’s lead to 20-15 but Annslee Nichols followed with a 3-pointer while baskets by Gilbert and Kylee Shannon increased the Lady Generals’ lead to 27-17.

Shannon added four more points down the stretch to give Jackson County a 31-23 lead at halftime.

The Lady Generals shot 12-of-24 from the slot in the first half, including 4-for-8 from the 3-point line.

Gilbert had 17 points, six rebounds and four assists while Shannon added six points.

Corbin hit 9-of-23 shot attempts as Clem and Walker each had six points apiece.

The Lady Redhounds came out in the second half looking like a different team.

Corbin opened the quarter with six straight points after four free throws by Bailey Stewart and a basket by Kylie Clem.

Gilbert’s 3-pointer pushed her team’s lead to 34-28 with five minutes remaining in the third quarter but the Lady Redhounds ended the period with an 11-4 run,

Darcie Anderson’s steal and layup with three seconds remaining gave her team a 39-38 lead entering the fourth quarter.
