MOUNT VERNON — Defending state champion Whitley County started the season with a loud bang after cruising past Rockcastle County with a dominating 19-0 win.
The Colonels (1-0) collected nine hits and took advantage of 18 walks during the win.
Coach Jeremy Shope also received a stellar pitching effort from Braydn Bargo, who tossed four innings, allowing only one hit and fanning six batters. Chris Cureton came in relief and pitched a scoreless inning ing while striking out two batters.
Whitley County scored four runs to open the game and followed with six runs in the third inning, one run in the fourth inning, and eight runs in the fifth inning.
“Really good outing by Bradyn Bargo,” Shope said. “Gave up only one hit with zero walks. That kind of outing will always give you a chance to win. Chris Cureton came in to pitch and threw really well.
“Rockcastle had trouble throwing strikes,” he added. “We were able to capitalize on those. Good first win. We go to Dunbar tomorrow for a game. We look forward to the competition.”
Ten Colonel players drove in at least one run while Ty Petrey, Jason Nunley, Ronald Osborne and Cureton drove in two runs apiece.
