LEXINGTON — McCracken County notched its 30th win of the season while moving on to Friday’s quarterfinal round of the KHSAA Girls’ Sweet 16 with a convincing 50-33 win over Russell.
The Lady Mustangs were led Claire Johnson’s 21-point, seven-rebound effort that saw her connect on 12-of-15 shot attempts from the free-throw line. Teammate Reagan Hill had 12 points and 11 rebounds along with three assists.
McCracken County shot 17-of-36 from the floor and outrebounded Russell, 35-20. The Lady Mustangs managed to overcome 18 turnovers while building a 17-9 advantage at the end of the first quarter and a 25-14 lead at halftime.
McCracken County’s grew to 38-21 entering the fourth quarter before they wrapped up the win in the final eight minutes.
Shaelyn Steele led Russell with 15 points and nine rebounds while Kennedy Darnell added 11 points.
