LEXINGTON — On Wednesday, the Whitley County Colonels were defeated by the Paul Laurence Dunbar Bulldogs 6-5 in a nail-biting finish. When speaking to the head coach of the Colonels Jeremy Shope he said “Good baseball game that we showed a lot of fight in. We didn’t deserve to win the game but had a chance to win it. Too many errors and not enough execution.”
Despite out-hitting their opponents ten to seven, the Colonels fell short. Dunbar’s Mason Moore’s homer in the bottom of the seventh inning secured the victory for the Bulldogs, who were trailing 5-4. RJ Osborne and Tyler Rose stood out with two hits each for the Colonels.
Whitley County got on the scoreboard in the third inning thanks to Bryce Anderson’s single, bringing in one run. However, Paul Laurence Dunbar regained the lead in the bottom of the third inning with Nick Griffith’s single and Logan Pittmon’s groundout, each driving in a run.
The Whitley County Colonels surged ahead in the top of the seventh inning when Hunter Wilson blasted a homer to left field, bringing in three runs, followed by Dee Parker grounding out for another run.
Nick Sawyers secured the victory for the Paul Laurence Dunbar Bulldogs. In relief, he didn’t allow any hits or runs across two-thirds of an inning, striking out one batter and issuing no walks.
EJ Allen suffered the loss for the Whitley County Colonels. The right-handed pitcher pitched one and two-thirds innings, conceding two runs on three hits, while striking out three and walking none. Rose began the game on the mound for the Whitley County Colonels, giving up three hits and two runs over three innings, with four strikeouts and two walks. “Our pitchers all threw well,” said Shope.
Carson Quenon started for the Paul Laurence Dunbar Varsity Bulldogs. The right-handed pitcher yielded five hits and one unearned run over five innings, striking out four and walking one.
The Whitley County Varsity Colonels amassed 10 hits during the game. Wilson led the charge from the heart of the lineup, driving in three runs to lead the team. The catcher finished the day 1-for-3 at the plate. Additionally, Rose swiped two bases.
Griffith set the pace from the leadoff spot for the Paul Laurence Dunbar Varsity Bulldogs, recording two hits in four at-bats. Moore contributed a perfect 1-for-1 performance at the plate, leading the team with two RBIs. Griffith also stole two bases.
When talking to coach Shope he said, “We didn’t get much going offensively until late in the game. Hats off to Dunbar for the walk-off homerun to match Hunter Wilson’s big blast in the top of the 7th.”
Next up, the Whitley County Varsity Colonels will host Madison Southern in their upcoming game on Friday, game time is set for 6:00 PM.
