WILLIAMSBURG — The Whitley County Colonels dominated Southwestern with a commanding 10-0 victory on Saturday. when talking with coach Jeremy Shope he said, “I think it the most complete game we have played so far this year, We played clean baseball, and some guys are starting to get comfortable at the plate.”
Their offensive prowess was evident early on as EJ Allen’s no-doubter home run in the first inning, put them on the scoreboard. “Always good to start off the game with a home run, EJ has a great feel and knows how to run the bases,” Shope added.
Maintaining their momentum, Dee Parker’s single in the second inning, coupled with a run scored on a passed ball, extended the Colonels’ lead.
In the fourth inning, the Colonels exploded with five runs off five hits. Matthew Wright’s double drove in two runs, while Bryce Anderson’s sacrifice fly added two more, with an additional run scored on a passed ball.
Pitcher Bradyn Bargo clinched the win for the Colonels, delivering a stellar performance, conceding zero runs on three hits over five innings, striking out four, and walking one. Meanwhile, Taylor of Southwestern took the loss after allowing nine runs (six earned) on nine hits over four innings. “Bargo didn’t have his best stuff today, but competed for us during some jams,“Shope said after being asked about Bargo’s performance today. Brady knows that he can pitch to contact, and let our defense make plays.”
Offensively, the Colonels amassed 11 hits, with Parker, Allen, and Jason Nunley each contributing two. Wright led in runs batted in, tallying two on the day.
Defensively, the Colonels executed one double play flawlessly and maintained a clean sheet in the field, with Spencer Bargo having the most fielding opportunities, with 5. “Anytime you throw strikes and make plays you give yourself a chance to win,” Shope added.
The Colonels are back in action at 4:00 today as they take on 13th Region opponent the Harlan County Black Bears.
