SOMERSET — Angela Singleton’s Whitley County Lady Colonels were looking to get off to a 5-0 start for the first time in more than 10 years, but came up short on Monday, dropping a 19-4 decision to Southwestern.
“These girls started out hot at the plate and then in about the third inning we hit a brick wall,” Singleton said. “It’s a tough one to take on the chin, but just like I told these girls this loss doesn’t not define them. It does not hinder their potential unless they allow it to. We have some things we are going to work on before tomorrow’s game and in the practices to come but they will be just fine. I have all the faith in these girls that they will continue to improve and get the job done.”
It looked as if the Lady Colonels (4-1) were well on their way to another win after scoring three runs in the top of the first inning, but the Lady Warriors answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-3 lead.
Whitley County tied the game at four apiece in the top of the second inning before seeing Southwestern score three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 7-4 edge.
The Lady Warriors put the game away with eight runs in the bottom of the third inning while adding four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Lady Colonels finished with seven hits but were their own worst enemies, committing 11 errors.
Caylee Singleton took the loss, allowing nine hits and eight earned runs in 3 2/3 of an inning while finishing with two strikeouts. Kara Canada pitched 1/3 of an inning, allowing three hits and three earned runs.
Amber Brown finished with a home run, an RBI and a run scored while Morgan Huddleston had a hit, an RBI and one run scored. Jayden Barton collected a hit and an RBI while Hallie Huddleston, and Jadynn Johnson each finished with a hit and a run scored apiece. Canada also finished with a hit.
