LONDON — North Laurel’s boys’ tennis team split a pair of matches this past week while the girls’ tennis team managed to pick up a 3-2 win over George Rogers Clark.
The Jaguars dropped a 7-2 match play loss to Corbin while picking up a 4-1 win over George Rogers Clark.
Boys
Corbin 7, North Laurel 2
Colton Cunagin picked up North Laurel’s lone singles win, defeating Corbin’s Jacob Frazier, 2-6, 7-6, 1-0 while the doubles team of Joe Clay Durham and Ethan Carter defeated Corbin’s Talmadge Maguet and John Paul Carmichael, 8-5, 6-3.
“Was tough to start out the season with Corbin,” North Laurel coach Bob Smith said. “They’re very strong, and they were just too good for us. But I felt we competed well, and we got a couple big wins with Colton coming back to win in singles and Joe Clay and Ethan getting us a win in doubles. Jasper and Derek didn’t play badly — Quinn and Nate are just that good. They’ll be a top seed at state this year in dubs, and we probably won’t face a better team than them this year.”
North Laurel 4, George Rogers Clark 1
The Jaguars got back to their winning ways against George Rogers Clark, winning, 4-1.
Jackson Gilbert won his singles match with a score of 6-2, 6-0 while North Laurel won all three doubles matches.
Jasper Jones and Derek Vaughn won 6-3, 6-2 while Colton Cunagin and Finn McArdle won, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0. Joe Clay Durham and Ethan Carter picked up a 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 victory.
“Solid win against a good Clark team,” Smith said. “We got up 2-1 with wins from Jackson in singles and Jasper and Derek in dubs. It all came down to the No. 2 and No. 3 dubs matches — both going to superbreakers. We had to get one of them, and we were fortunate to get both of them. Kudos to Colton and Finn along with Joe Clay and Ethan in scratching out two hard-fought wins when we really needed them.”
Girls
North Laurel 3, George Rogers Clark 2
The Lady Jaguars win their season-opening match, securing a 3-2 victory over George Rogers Clark.
Adelyn Maxey won her singles match, 6-2, 6-2 while North Laurel won two doubles matches.
Brooke Hubbard and Marlie McDaniel won 6-3, 7-6 while Taylor Vaughn and Alyssa Lowe picked up a 6-4, 7-6 win.
“Proud of our girls coming back to get a close win without a few of our top girls for this one,” Smith said. “They got up 2-0 on us before Marlie and Brooke got us on the board in dubs, Adelyn had a great first match for us in singles, and Taylor and Alyssa clinched the team win with a tight win in dubs. So our three wins all came from girls who were not in our top six last year — that should help their confidence moving forward.”
