SOMERSET — Solid pitching and hitting efforts by Morgan Jackson combined with an impressive defensive effort led to South Laurel’s 13-1 win over Somerset Tuesday.
The Lady Cardinals (3-2) committed only one error while Jackson kept the Lady Briar Jumpers’ hitters at bay, limiting them to only four hits, and one earned run.
South Laurel did damage at the plate, too.
Jackson was a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base while Emmie Rice and Ryleigh Bretz each connected with home runs in the win.
Rice delivered a grand slam, finishing with four RBI and one run scored while Bretz had two hits, two RBI and three runs scored.
Addison Baker delivered three hits and scored three runs while Bailey Frazier had a hit and a run scored. Amara Horn drove in a run, scoring once.
“When your kids work hard, it’s always good for them to be rewarded with a win,” South Laurel coach Carly Mink said. “We continue to focus on the fundamentals of defense and making routine plays. Very proud of how much we’ve improved in that phase of the game.
“It was good to be able settle into the game early and play with a lead,” she added. “Morgan has put in a lot of work in the off-season and it was good to see it pay off for her tonight. She was able to throw a lot of strikes, pitch to contact, and trust her defense.”
The Lady Cardinals scored two runs in both the first and second innings to take an early 4-0 lead.
Somerset cut its deficit to three runs (4-1) in the bottom of the third inning but South Laurel added six runs in the fourth inning and three more runs in the fifth inning to wrap-up the victory.
