Cardinals suffer first loss, fall to Madison Southern, 7-3

RICHMOND — South Laurel’s dug its elf an early hole and never recovered, losing to Madison Southern on Tuesday, 7-3.

The Cardinals fell behind 4-0 after two innings of play before cutting their deficit to 4-2 after the top of the third inning.

Madison Central answered with two runs in the bottom of the third inning while adding another run in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 7-2 lead. The Cardinals scored a run in the top of the seventh but couldn’t get any closer.

Keaton Creech took the loss on the mound, allowing nine hits and four earned runs in four innings of works while striking out three batters. Tyler Curry pitched the final two innings, giving up two hits and one earned runs while fanning three batters.

Defensively, Smith’s squad made three errors.

“I told the boys some things we continued to get away with caught up with us, and we need to work on those things,” Smith said. “I really like our pitching staff. It’s going to be a strength for us. We didn’t make some plays we should have made, and when you give a team like Madison Southern free base runners, it’s going to come back to bite you.

Will Alsip led South Laurel at the plate with a 3-for-3 effort while driving in a run and scoring once. Cole Harville had two hits and one run scored while Noah Smith had two hits and two RBI. Creech finished with a hit and a run scored.
