Corbin High School boys’ and girls’ teams’ weekly Wrap-up: Both teams roll during opening week of play

CORBIN — Corbin’s boys’ and girls’ tennis teams are off to red-hot starts after picking up impressive wins this past week.
The boys’ squad picked up wins over North Laurel and George Rogers’ Clark while the girls’ team cruised to an easy win over Clay County.

Boys
Corbin 7, North Laurel 2
Corbin coach Eric Maguet was pleased with the way his team came and handed North Laurel a 7-2 loss.
The Redhounds impressed in both singles and doubles play.
“We had a nice kickoff to the season by opening up with a region contender in North Laurel,” he said. “All the boys played well. John Ball beat Zaid Salem who has really improved from last year in singles, 6-0, and 6-1. Quinn Maguet and Nate Hill had a strong start by beating Jasper Jones and Derek Vaughn, who were regional semi finalists from last year, 6-0, 6-1.
“I was really proud of my two newcomers in JP Carmicheal and Tal Maguet in their very first tennis match losing, 7-5, 6-3,” he added. “They will continue to improve as they gain more experience.”

Corbin 5, George Rogers Clark 0
The Redhounds wasted no time in defeating George Rogers Clark.
Corbin dominated in both singles and doubles action, improving to 2-0 this past week.
“It’s always nice to beat a big name school like that,” Maguet said. “They are generally good in all sports, so we were happy. Quinn and Nate played doubles in the number one slot and had a convincing 6-0, 6-0 win. Jacob Frazier and Connor Middleton got a 6-1, 6-3 win at the number two doubles.
“Connor has only practiced a couple of days coming off basketball and looked really good,” he added. “Jacob has worked real hard and will be a force as a senior.”

Girls
Corbin 9, Clay County 0
The Lady Redhounds put on a dominating effort in their win over Clayton County.
Corbin recorded a 9-0 victory, picking up six wins in singles (eight overall) and three wins in doubles.
Isabella Lopez (6-0, 6-1), MaryAlice McVey (3-6, 6-4, 10-8), Haley Carr (8-2), Tory Canady (8-5), Karlee Dickerson (8-2), Abigail Lewis (8-1), Lillian Linn (8-6), and Karlee Dickerson (6-1) each win their respective singles match while the doubles teams of Olivia McArthur/Riley Lewis (8-6), Carr/Dickerson (8-1), and Lewis/Linn (9-8(4)) each won their respective matches.
“We were happy to get our region play started,” Corbin coach Chris Jones said. “Clay County has nice new courts but the wind made it tough on everyone. I’m really proud of how our girls overcame the weather and adjusted their game to pickup wins on every court.
“MaryAlice McVey kept her composure after falling behind early but still managed to come back and win in a super tie-breaker,” he added. “Olivia McArthur and Riley Lewis got a big win over a solid Clay County No. 1 doubles team.”
