DANVILLE — Kenzie Williams continues to shine each time she hits the pitcher’s circle.
She matched Boyle County’s Abby Peavler pitch by pitch, as the two hurlers combined to record 33 strikeouts during the Lady Cardinals’ 2-1 win.
The one-run victory also turned out to be South Laurel coach Carly Mink’s 100th career win.
Williams struck out 16 batters, allowing only four hits and one earned run while Peavler allowed six hits, two earned runs and struck out 17 batters.
South Laurel’s bottom of the order came up clutch when needed.
Bailey Frazier collected two hits, one RBI while, and one run scored while Ryleigh Brett finished with a hit and an RBI. Audrey Likins and Morgan Jackson finished with a hit apiece.
“Just an overall great team win,” Mink said. “We were able to put together some really good at bats that led to an important insurance run in the top of the seventh.
“Kenzie put together another great performance, just not enough I can say about how she battled tonight,” she added. “We played another clean game behind her. We’re just focused on getting better everyday. Tonight is a good win, but we have to reset and be ready for tomorrow.”
The Lady Cardinals took a 1-0 lead with a run in the second inning while adding an insurance run in the top of the seventh, extending their lead to 2-0.
The Lady Rebels got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh as Havannah Maddox connected with a lead off home run.
The solo shot didn’t seem to bother Williams at all. The freshman pitcher recorded the next three batters she faced, including striking out the final two batters, allowing South Laurel to secure the win.
