Lady Wildcats come out on top after surviving late Whitley County rally

WILLIAMSBURG — Lynn Camp looked to be in control of Thursday’s 13th Region matchup against Whitley County, building a 7-0 lead entering the bottom of the sixth inning.

But coach Angela Singleton’s Lady Colonels never quit, rallying for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning while adding four more runs in the bottom of the seventh, but coming up one run short, losing to the Lady Wildcats, 8-7.

Even though her team were on the ropes, Lynn Camp coach Nikki Hendrix was proud of how her players didn’t give up.

“I am so proud of these girls, and how they bounced back from the game against Clay County,” she said. “They were very focused and determined, and it showed all throughout the game. There were times when they couldn’t quit and gave up and they didn’t, especially in the last inning.

“Darrell (Hendrix) and I kept telling them that this team is a really good hitting team, and they can make a come back, so we had to score runs early and play good defensively.”

Cambree Prewitt led Lynn Camp (4-1) at the plate with three hits and an RBI while Jorja Carnes turned in a gritty effort in the pitcher’s circle, allowing seven hits and four earned runs in seven innings while striking out nine batters.

Lauren Partin finished with two hits, three RBI and a run scored while Allison Messer delivered two hits and an RBI. Charity Steele had two hits, an RBI and one run scored while Chelsea Hendrickson finished with two hits and two runs scored. Lily Henzize had two hits and scored once while Emma Burnette finished with two hits and had a run scored. Carnes finished with a hit along with Bailey Martin.

“Jorja had a great night on the mound and her teammates really backed her up with their bats,” Hendrix said. “Charity Steele, Lauren Partin, and Cambree Prewitt had some really big hits. I’m hoping the momentum will carry over until Friday and the two games we have this weekend.”

Whitley County’s (5-2) Kara Canada had two hits and two RBI while Jayden Barton finished with two hits, two RBI, and one run scored. Adalee Johnson finished with one hit, two RBI and one run scored.
