Red-hot Cardinals connect with four home runs during 15-3 win over Knox Central

BARBOURVILLE — South Laurel’s was hitting on all cylinders during the Cardinals’ 15-3 rout of Knox Central on Thursday.

South Laurel (8-2) exploded for 11 hits, four went for home runs, while Will Alsip limited the Panthers to only one hit during the Cardinals’ season-best fifth win in a row.

“Any time you can have a win streak like we have early in the season it’s fun,” South Laurel coach Trey Smith said. I thought we were close to breaking through with our bats. We had been getting better and better at the plate the past few games, and tonight we did a great job. Knox Central is a really good team, and for us to come out and hit like that is really big for us. It’s really nice to see.”

South Laurel connected with eight extra base hits in the win — four home runs and four doubles.

Hunter Bundy, Jack Vaughn, Will Alsip, and Waylon Hensley each went deep in the win while Vincent Sizemore connected with two doubles. Austyn Byrd and Tyler Curry had a double apiece.

Alsip was dominant on the mound, tossing all five innings while surrendering only one hit and one earned run. He finished with six strikeouts.

Hensley finished with a home run, three RBI, and one run scored. Sizemore was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBI while Byrd delivered two hits, two RBI, and scored once. Alsip had two hits (home run), two RBI, and a run scored while Vaughn had a home run, two RBI, and one run scored. Bundy delivered a home run, one RBI, and scored three times while Curry finished with a hit, two RBI, and one run scored. Keaton Creech drove in a run and scored once while Cole Harville scored twice.

The Cardinals took control of the game with an eight-run second inning. They added four runs in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth inning to put the game away.
