LONDON — South Laurel will enter spring break play on a high note, winners of six straight after handing Middlesboro a 10-0 loss on Friday.
The Cardinals (9-2) were led by their one through five hitters while coach Trey Smith used five pitchers to cruise in the win.
South Laurel’s one through five hitters combined to go 6-for-13 with seven RBI, and six runs scored while the pitchers combined to allow only two hits, and no runs while striking out seven batters.
“I really like our pitching staff,” Smith said. “We go seven, eight or nine deep. It showed today. We used multiple guys, and each of them did a great job.
“It was a good team win,” he added. “I think we are starting to hit our stride hitting the ball.”
The game was tied entering the bottom of the third inning when the Cardinals struck for five runs while adding five more runs in the fourth inning.
Waylon Hensley went 3-for-3 with two RBI, and two hits while Cole Harville had a hit, two RBI, and two runs scored. Will Alsip delivered a hit and two RBI while Vincent Sizemore drove in two runs. Hunter Bundy finished with a hit and two runs scored. Austin Byrd had a hit and scored twice while Keaton Creech finished with a hit and Noah Smith scored once.
Harville started the game, tossing an inning while allowing a hit and finishing with three Ks. Tyler Curry through a scoreless and hitless inning while striking out a batter. Hensley got the win, allowing only a hit in an inning of work while Creech pitched an inning and struck out a batter. Byrd tossed a scoreless fifth inning surrendering no hits while fanning two batters.
Smith said he’s pleased with where his team is at heading into next week’s spring break trip to South Carolina.
“Every time we go to Myrtle Beach, we play elite competition,” he said. “We learn a lot about ourselves, and I’m really happy with where we are at right now.”
