Williams limits Corbin to two hits during South Laurel’s 2-0 win

LONDON — South Laurel coach Carly Mink gave her team a pep talk, and told her players to put Monday night’s loss behind them with an important 50th District matchup against Corbin on Tuesday.

The Lady Cardinals did just that, capturing their sixth win during their past seven games with a 2-0 victory over the Lady Redhounds.

“We made sure last night was behind them, that kind of stuff happens in this game,” Mink said of her team refocusing on Tuesday’s game after losing to Perry Central. “Says a lot about us to be able to come back and perform tonight.”

South Laurel (12-4 overall, 1-0 against 50th District opponents) overcame three errors, receiving a shutdown effort by freshman Kenzie Williams during the two-run win.

Williams limited the Lady Redhounds to only two hits while striking out 11 batters.

“Any time you can win a district game and especially the first one of the year, it gets you off to a good start,” Mink said. “We had a few throwing errors but Kenzie did a great job of battling out of it with runners on. Our defense also made some really big plays in big moments.”

Corbin (4-10, 0-1) has now lost seven games in a row.

South Laurel took a 1-0 lead in the first inning before adding its final run during the fourth inning.

Emmie Rice had a hit and an RBI while Morgan Jackson finished with a hit and a run scored. Skye Lawson also scored while Amara Horn delivered a hit and an RBI. Addison Baker also finished with a hit.

Danni Foley took the loss, tossing six innings while allowing two runs. She also struck out nine batters.

Mikaila Hopkins had the Lady Redhounds lone hits, finishing with two.
