LONDON — Corbin pitcher Braderic Helton tossed a complete game four-hitter while striking out 10 batters to help guide the Redhounds to its second consecutive 50th District win, a 4-1 decision over South Laurel.
The Redhounds (13-2overall, 2-0 vs. 50th District opponents) have now won 11 games in a row while the Cardinals (10-7, 0-2) have dropped five straight games.
“Bradric was really good tonight, his performance was able to make up for some of our mistakes,” Corbin coach Cody Philpot said. “Mikey has stayed hot at the plate and some others are coming around but we still have work to do. This district is going to be really tough, so starting out 2-0 is really important for us. I’m proud of the way these guys keep battling and finding a way to win.”
Corbin took a 1-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a lead-off double by Mikey Cima, who was later driven in by Noah Cima.
The Redhounds’ lead grew to 2-0 in the fourth inning after a lead-off single by Kade Elam led to Neal’s run-scoring hit.
Corbin added another run in the fifth to go ahead 3-0 before South Laurel scored in the top of the sixth to cut its deficit to 3-1. The Redhounds added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
