10 walks play big role in South Laurel’s 9-1 loss to East Jessamine

The Cardinals’ main strength struggled throughout their 9-1 loss to East Jessamine on Saturday.

South Laurel’s pitching staff limited East Jessamine to only six hits but issued a combined 10 walks during its eight-run loss to the Jaguars.

East Jessamine built a 4-1 lead after three innings and used a five-run sixth inning to out the game out of reach.

Tyler Curry led the Cardinals with three hits while Will Alsip had two hits and drove in a run. Jack Vaughn and Waylon Hensley also had a hit apiece in the loss.

Austin Byrd took the loss, tossing 3 1/3 of an inning while allowing three hits and two earned runs. He struck out one batter. Keaton Smith pitched 2 1/3 of an inning, surrendering three hits and five earned runs. Smith finished with one strikeout. Vaughn tossed 1/3 of an inning, allowing no runs or hits.
