WILLIAMSBURG — South Laurel’s Will Alsip had a big day at the plate and on the mound during Monday’s 50th District matchup against Williamsburg.
Alsip picked up the win, tossing three innings while allowing two hits and one earned run as the Cardinals defeated the Yellow Jackets, 18-4.
Alsip also struck out six batters while delivering a home run and finishing with two hits, two RBI and one run scored. Freshman Jamison West came in relief for Alsip, pitching two scoreless innings while allowing one hit and finishing with four strikeouts.
“I am proud of our guys for coming out and really hitting the baseball,” South Laurel coach Trey Smith said. “We had a solid game offensively and several young guys, some at bats. It’s always nice to get a district win.”
The win improved South Laurel to 13-8 overall and 1-2 against district competition while Williamsburg falls to 1-12 and 0-3.
The Cardinals led 3-0 after two innings before striking for seven runs in the top of the third. Williamsburg answered with four runs in the bottom of the third, but South Laurel put the game away with eight unanswered runs.
Hunter Bundy had two hits, one triple, two stolen bases, four RBI, and three runs scored while Vincent Sizemore finished with two hits and two RBI. Waylon Hensley had a hit and two RBI while Tyler Curry delivered two hits and an RBI while scoring once. Austin Byrd scored twice and finished with a hit while Bryson Turner scored once along with Jameson Durham. Jamison West finished with a hit and an RBI while Reece Noble had a hit, an RBI, and a run scored. Keaton Smith finished with two runs scored while Jack Vaughn was 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Keaton Creech finished with an RBI, and scored once.
Gabe Prewitt led the Yellow Jackets with two hits while Isaiah Sizemore finished with a hit, an RBI, and a run scored. Jason Flannery drives in two runs while Connor Vanover and Hayden Kleinert each scored one run apiece.
