CORBIN — Lynn Camp coach Nikki Hendrix entered Tuesday’s huge 51st District matchup with Pineville knowing it was a must-win situation.
A win would put the Lady Wildcat in prime position to get the 51st District’s top seed.
The only problem?
Lynn Camp was searching for some type of momentum while riding a seven-game losing skid into the matchup.
But Hendrix’s Lady Wildcats (8-8) showed a lot of heart, withstanding a scoreless battle for five and a half innings before pushing across two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning that would secure their 2-0 win over the Lady Mountain Lions.
Jorja Carnes got the job done at the plate and in the pitcher’s circle, going 2-for-3 with an RBI while limiting Pineville to only four hits, and striking out 14 batters.
“This was a great district win for us,” Hendrix said. “I’m really proud of my girls and the fight they showed tonight. At the beginning of the game we had runners on, but we weren’t able to score, but at the end of the game, we got runners on and we were able to capitalize on that and score some runs.
“We played really good defense tonight and Jorja Carnes had a stellar performance on the mound,” she added. “I want to thank all the fans who came out and watched us tonight. The bleachers were packed and I appreciate their support every time we play. We have another big district game at home Thursday versus Knox Central, so I hope this moment will carryover to that game.”
Rachel Howard took the loss for Pineville (4-5), but matches Carnes pitch for pitch, tossing six innings while giving up six hits and two earned runs. She finished with 13 strikeouts.
