LONDON — Fresh off a walk-off loss to Clay County just the night before, North Laurel returned the favor on Tuesday as Andrew Cupp’s line drive to left field scored Jude McWhorter while giving the Jaguars a 5-4 win in nine innings and over the Tigers.
“Well, we have played Clay on back-to-back days and lost 11-10 on a walk-off by Clay, and tonight we win 5-4 on a walk-off by Andrew Cupp. Two great games — our team is getting better and better every game. The walk-off tonight feels much better than last night’s.”
The win improved North Laurel to 7-9 overall and 1-1 against 49th District opponents. Clay County is now 11-8 after starting the season 7-0. The Tigers are 3-1 against district opponents.
Dylan Hurley got the start for the Jaguars, turning in a stellar effort, tossing seven innings while giving up five hits and three earned runs. He struck six batters out. Seventh grader Cooper Parman pitched the final two innings, and didn’t allow a hit. He gave up one earned run while striking out three batters.
“Our pitchers Dylan Hurley and Cooper Parman threw great tonight,” McWhorter said.
Cameron Smith went 3-for-3 at the plate for North Laurel while Carter Kelley had two hits, two RBI, and one run scored. Eli Holt and Cupp finished with a hit and an RBI apiece. Jude McWhorter also had a big game, collecting two hits, an RBI, and scoring twice. Cam Hinkle had a hit and scored once while Cooper Elza finished with a hit. Parkman also scored a run.
Ethan Jackson led Clay County with a hit and two RBI while Hayden Crockett, Tate Rice, Tyson Wagers, and Brody Hooker finished with a hit and a run scored apiece.
Hooker pitched four innings, giving up seven hits and three earned runs while striking out a batter. Rice took the loss, tossing 4 1/3 of an inning, allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out a batter.
