CORBIN — South Laurel moved one step closer to capturing the 50th District’s top seed with a 6-1 win on the road against rival Corbin.
The Lady Cardinals scored in six of the seven innings, received home runs by Ryleigh Bretz and Skye Lawson while a solid defensive effort combined with another stellar pitching performance by Kenzie Williams played huge roles in the win.
South Laurel is now 16-5 overall and 3-0 against 50th District opponents. The Lady Redhounds fall to 6-14 and 0-2 in district play.
“We continue to focus on having good at bats and being productive all the way throughout the lineup,” South Laurel coach Carly Mink said. “We were able to have good at bats and got timely hits. We also spent a lot of time on getting better defensively and continue to work on it. Very good defensive effort tonight.”
Morgan Jackson also came up huge at the plate, leading the way with a 3-for-4 effort while driving in two runs and scoring once. Williams, Lawson, Bretz, and Emmie Rice finished with a hit and an RBI apiece. Amara Horn had two hits while Addison Baker finished with a hit and a run scored.
Williams recorded another complete game while allowing only five hits and one earned run. She struck out six batters.
“Great effort from Kenzie tonight,” Mink said. “She continues to battle and gives us chance to win games.”
Danni Foley led Corbin with two hits while Morgan Hicks finished with a hit and an RBI. Kallie Housley had a hit and scored once while Alana Stidham finished with a hit.
