Lady Cardinals clinch 50th District’s top seed with 12-5 win over Whitley County 

WILLIAMSBURG — South Laurel locked up the 50th District’s top seed by handing Whitley County a 12-5 loss on Thursday.

The Lady Cardinals (18-5) ran their win streak to six games and improved to 5-0 against district opponents while the Lady Colonels fell to 12-11 and 1-2 in district play.

South Laurel scored six runs in the first two innings before Whitley County got on the scoreboard with three runs in the bottom of the third. The Lady Cardinals put the game out of reach with a run in the fourth Inning, three runs in the sixth inning, and two runs in the seventh inning.

“Our first goal of the year was to capture the one seed in the district,” South Laurel coach Carly Mink said. “Everything from this point forward will be to prepare for the postseason. 

“We hit the ball extremely well but there were also some things we can take away from tonight’s game to improve on,” she added. “Always a tough place to play and to win at, proud of our girls.”

South Laurel outhit the Lady Colonels, 22-7, with all nine players getting at least one hit apiece. Eight players finished with multiple hits as Audrey Likins turned in a 5-for-5 effort with one RBI and one run scored. Addison Baker had three hits, two RBI, and two runs scored while Morgan Jackson finished with three hits, an RBI, and two runs scored. Skye Lawson and Amara Horn had two hits, two RBI, and a run scored while Ryleigh Bretz and Kenzie Williams finished with two hits, an RBI, and a run scored apiece. Bailey Frazier had two hits and scored twice while Emmie Rice had a hit, and two RBI.

Williams got the win, her 11th of the season, tossing seven innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs while striking out nine batters.

Adalee Johnson led Whitley County with two hits, two RBI, and one run scored. Morgan Huddleston also had two hits. Jayden Barton finished with a hit, an RBI, and two runs scored while Payton Hurst collected a hit, an RBI, and a run scored. Kara Canada delivered a hit and an RBI.
