CORBIN — Facing a full count with bases loaded and her team staring at a 6-3 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning, Corbin’s Morgan Hicks did what she normally does at the plate, beat down and swing away.
She did just that, and connected with a game-winning grand slam, giving her team a thrilling comeback from behind 7-6 win over Ed a stunned Clay County team.
Hicks came up clutch once again, connecting with her sixth home run while pushing the Lady Redhounds’ win streak to a season-best nine games.
Corbin is now 15-14, and moved over the .500 mark for the first time since March 27.
“Well it’s that time of year,” Corbin coach Crystal Stidham said. “Every game is a big game as we approach the postseason. Clay came to play, they were connecting and their pitching was keeping most of my girls off balance at first. Except Kallie Housley. She was on-point tonight at the plate and came up huge, kept giving the team life. She started with a huge home run, a double, and a triple before they intentionally walked her in the bottom of the seventh, bases were loaded as Morgan Hicks came up to the plate with no outs. She did her thing. Morgan is a powerful hitter. I knew if she could be solid, it would go. The ball is always scary coming off her bat, and she buckled down, team on her shoulders and she sent the ball down the creek.
“This grand slam was a definite motivator to say don’t count us out,” she added. “She stepped up big time and took care of business for us, even in the midst of being down 6-3, so, so proud of her.
“Our team has been on a run and wanting to prove we’ve played a tough schedule,“ Stidham continued. “We faced a lot of illness, games without players, just ups and downs and after spring break, it was time to grind and they have done just that. We have refocused and tonight was a great win to show we can face the adversity or the challenges and rise above them. My Lady Redhounds are an amazing group of ladies, they fought and they overcame. So proud of their drive and their fight tonight. Let’s go Lady Redhounds.”
