LONDON — The streak goes on.
When it comes to dominating a sport in the 13th Region, no school has done it better than Corbin.
The boys’ tennis team has now won an impressive 23 regional championships after defeating North Laurel in the 13th Region Team championship, 3-1.
Eric Maguet’s squad cruised to another regional crown by defeating Oneida Baptist in the semifinals while winning all three singles matches against the Jaguars.
“I am so happy for all of the boys,” Maguet said. “We have had a good regular season playing a really tough out of region schedule, losing four of our five times by the score of 3-2 and the fifth, 3-1, so we’ve been super competitive in all the matches. It really paid off in the end as we captured our 23rd region championship in a row.”
Quinn Maguet (6-0, 6-0) won his singles match while J.P. Carmichael fell to North Laurel’s Jasper Jones, 6-0, 6-2. Nate Hill was in the process of winning his match, leading 6-1, 5-1, but the Redhounds’ doubles teams of Connor Middleton/John Ball (6-2, 6-3) and Tanner Marcum and Jacob Frazier (6-0, 6-1) secured their victories before Hill could finish his match
“I’m super proud of all the boys especially the seniors, Quinn, Jacob and Tanner,” Maguet said. “Those boys have been a huge part of our success during their career. Everyone on the team improved throughout the year which is nice to see as the coach. Nate, John, Connor had such a good year. Really proud of JP Carmichael, this kid didn’t start playing tennis until the season started in February and he was in the starting lineup playing kids on other teams that have been playing tennis for several years most of the time and has competed extremely well.
“We won’t get much rest as the individual region tournament starts Thursday at North Laurel,” he added. “All four of our teams will be seeded in the tournament, so everyone will have an excellent chance to qualify for the state tournament.”
