MCKEE — Two home runs combined with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate by Morgan Edwards, a 4-for-4 effort from Katie Sams, and a one-hit performance by Emma Carl in the pitcher’s circle played huge roles in North Laurel’s 11-1 win over Jackson County in Tuesday’s 49th District Fastpitch Tournament title game.
Sams finished with an RBI, and three RBI as well while Edwards collected four RBI and two runs scored. Carl limited the Lady Generals to only one hit and three base runners while striking out four batters.
The Lady Jaguars (24-9) led 5-1 entering the fifth inning before exploding for six runs to end the game.
“Really good game by our girls tonight,” North Laurel coach Chris Edwards said. “Good hitting, pitching and defense tonight turned in a good result against a good Jackson County team. Offensively, 14 hits in four 1/3 innings. Of course I’ll take that. Multiple hits from Katie Sams, Saige McClure, Emma Carl and Morgan Edwards. Multiple extra base hits too which is always good.
“Emma Carl pitched another great game,” he added. “A one hitter and no earned runs. She has been really, really good lately. Defensively, we had one error on a hard hit ball. When we pitch and play defense, we can be really good. Now we set our sights on whatever is next. We will get some rest and then get back to work and wait on the region draw. We always wanna go into the region as a district champion and we put together a good game tonight to accomplish that goal. Go Jags.”
Baylee Berry had Jackson County’s lone hit while Candice Williams drove in her team’s lone run. Williams also pitched, allowing 14 hits and 11 earned runs in 4 2/3 of an inning. She struck out three batters.
