Corbin Redhounds looking to make a deep run in the state championships

CORBIN — The Corbin Redhound enter the season with high expectations and they’ve carried over into this week’s KHSAA State Baseball Tournament.

The Redhounds (30-10) are winners of nine straight and are one of many teams that look to be built to make a deep run beginning Friday.

“The state tournament brings together the best of the best, there’s no question,” Corbin coach Cody Philpot said. “But we know we belong in that conversation and are going into this with the intent of winning it.

“We have to continue to play our brand of baseball,” he added. “We’ve been throwing strikes, making the routine plays and keeping pressure on people offensively. If we can continue to do that then we have a chance against anyone.”

The Redhounds open the state tournament against Owensboro Catholic. A win over the Aces would setup a matchup with either Estill County or Hopkinsville.

“The winner of our game would see the winner of Estill County, who we’ve played this year, and Hopkinsville,” Philpot said. “Both are good ball clubs with a lot of tradition. After that there are several perennial powers like McCracken and West Jessamine who would likely be waiting.”

So what are Corbin’s keys to success.

“Relax and perform,” Philpot said. “This group has played a lot of ball and the majority of them were a huge part of a good team showing up here against a great Central Hardin team two years ago. That experience will be vital to making a run this year.”
