When push came to shove, Tom Greer’s Corbin Redhounds made the plays when needed most.
Trailing, 14-10, with seven minutes remaining in Friday’s contest against 5A heavyweight Pulaski County, quarterback Kade Elam orchestrated a drive that saw his four-yard touchdown run give the Redhounds a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
Corbin’s defense made one final defensive stand allowing the Redhounds to remain unbeaten at 4-0 while defeating the Maroons, 24-21.
After earning L4 Security 13th Region Media Network Defensive Player do the Week honors this past week after a two-interception effort against Franklin County, Corbin’s Zander Curry picked up where he left off, recording an interception on Pulaski County’s first offensive play of the game.
The Redhounds failed to find the end zone after the turnover but did manage to take a 3-0 lead after a 22-yard field goal by Jacob Baker with 8:34 remaining in the first quarter.
Corbin was able to find the end zone on its second offensive series thanks to Curry. The Redhounds took a 10-0 lead with 13 seconds remaining in the opening quarter after Curry raced 15-yards for a score.
The Maroons started to make things interesting in the third quarter. After holding Corbin’s offense scoreless, Pulaski County scored its first touchdown of the game, a one-yard run to cut its deficit to 10-7 at the five-minute mark.
The Maroon defense continued to stifle the Redhound offense in the fourth quarter. Pulaski County took a 14-10 lead with 7:52 remaining in regulation after intercepting a pass and returning it 54 yards for a score.
Pulaski County’s lead didn’t last long, though.
Elam marched his team downfield, and capped the drive off with a four-yard touchdown run, giving the Redhounds a 17-14 advantage with 5:08 left.
After Corbin’s defense made a key defensive stand, Elam took his team downfield again while adding his second rushing score of the game, a one-yarder to secure a 24-14 advantage over Pulaski County with 1:43 remaining.
The Maroons added a touchdown with 15.7 seconds remaining but failed to get any closer.
The Redhounds will hit the road Friday and face-off against Somerset.
