LONDON — A much-improved South Laurel Lady Cardinal volleyball team captured their first win of the season on Thursday thanks to a 3-0 shut out win over Clay County.
The Lady Cardinals turned in key efforts on offense and defense to improve to 1-1 after recording a 25-13, 25-12, and 25-14 victory.
“I was proud of the way we came out after having a rough game earlier this week,” South Laurel coach Shelley Nunley said. “We were more cohesive and talkative, and it really impacted what we could do both defensively and offensively. I was especially pleased with how our aggressive our middles played tonight. Both are getting more and more comfortable playing a lot of fast-paced balls at the net, and we’re finally seeing some big hits from them.
“Skeeter (Mabe) ended the night as our kill leader with seven,” she added. “All seven of which were some of the best swings I’ve seen from her in the three years she’s played for me. Our serving was looking a lot better too, and we ended the night with 21 aces. We still have plenty to work on, but this game was a much better showing for the Cardinals.”
