WILLIAMSBURG — Many 13th Region soccer fans expected a down to the wire match between Coebin and Whitley County in Monday’s Class 2A, Section 7 championship game, and they’re got just that.
Corbin held a slim 1-0 lead until the 78th minute when the Colonels’ scored to tie the game at one apiece while eventually sending the match into a shootout.
The Redhounds prevailed, 4-2, during the shootout, pulling off a 2-1 win to capture the championship.
“Whitley always brings the energy on their field and we had to battle today to hold on and get the win,” Corbin coach Roger Taylor said.
John Carmichael scored the Redhounds’ lone goal in regulation on a penalty kick during the 33rd minute to give his team a 1-0 advantage.
The scored remained 1-0 until the 78th minute when Jacob Senters tied the game at one apiece after connecting with a penalty kick.
Carmichael, John Ball, Blake Butler, and Jackson Willis scored in the shootout while keeper Parker Stacy had a save.
The win snapped Corbin’s three-game losing skid while the Redhounds improved to 2-4 during the process. The Colonels have now lost three games in a row, falling to 2-3.
