MAKING HISTORY: Williamsburg records first-ever 50th District win, snaps 48-game district losing skid with win over South Laurel

LONDON — It’s been a long time coming but the Williamsburg Lady Yellow Jackets volleyball program has finally got over the 50th District hump.
Williamsburg (6-1) recorded its first-ever 50th District win by defeating South Laurel, 3-1, on Tuesday.
The Lady Yellow Jackets were 0-14 against the Lady Cardinals until Tuesday’s 25-22, 25-15, 22-25, and 25-18 win.
Williamsburg was 0-48 against 50th District teams, but has now asserted itself as one of the top teams in the district and 13th Region.
“A lot of hard work went into this win,” Williamsburg coach Dirk Berta said. “We struggled at times in serve receive and didn’t have the offense we are use to having, but this win tonight shows the grit and determination this group has.
“I am very proud of this group of girls and this edition of Williamsburg Volleyball,” he added. “They came out tonight, knowing the opportunity they had in front of them to get the programs first ever 50th District win, and didn’t flinch not one time. Time and time again they chose to put the team first and to continue playing the next point. Tonight is a big night for Williamsburg volleyball, proving that we can and will compete in the 50th District. We are looking forward to Thursday and another game against Jackson County. Go Jackets.”
