RICHMOND — It looked as if the South Laurel Cardinals were going to come away with a win over Madison Southern, but struggles in the second half led to a 3-all draw.
South Laurel (5-1-1) built a 3-1 lead thanks to goals from Henri Flaegel, Drew Allen, and Liam Zik before the Eagles began to rally, converting two penalty kicks to force a draw.
“We played an excellent first half and really did well to get the ball off of our feet and play quickly,” South Laurel coach Brooks Cawood said. “The second half was a different story. We sat too far back and the ball was in our defensive third of the field way too much. And although it is frustrating to give up two penalty kicks in one half, we just were not pushing the field enough to keep from being so vulnerable when defending.
“I was happy that we could come out strong in the first half for a change,” he added. “I explained to the boys that we have got to learn to connect two halves of soccer together. Once we can do that, I feel like we can be a difficult team to play.”
