LONDON — Both Knox Central and South Laurel barreled for four quarter before seeing the Cardinals score 11 points in a one-minute span to stun Knox Central in Friday’s Martin’s Peterbilt Bowl with a 24-13 win.
Both teams held leads in the game before a touchdown pass from Mason Griffin to Wes Dowell gave South Laurel an 18-13 lead with 1:04 remaining in the game.
A pick six by freshman Zach Thomas wrapped up the 11-point win for the Cardinals.
South Laurel improved to 2-0 while the Panthers fell to 0-2.
“I’m really proud of our team in the fact that they played hard and never gave up,” South Laurel coach John Hines said. “We had our frustrating moments but players never stop battling. It’s always good to win your home bowl game on your home park and we’re thrilled to do it. I’m extremely proud of all the coaches and players and everybody that had a part in it.”
Noah Smith’s rushing touchdown gave the Cardinals a 6-0 lead just two and a half minutes into the game before a touchdown by Johnathan Hobbs allowed Knox Central to take a 7-6 edge with 1:31 remaining in the first quarter.
The Panthers held the lead until another rushing touchdown by Smith allowed the Cardinals to take a 12-7 lead with 5:52 remaining in regulation.
Knox Central continued to battle and reclaimed a 13-12 advantage after a touchdown run by Brayden Sizemore with 2:36 left.
That’s when South Laurel took over and scored twice in the final minute to grab the win.
