WILLIAMSBURG — The Whitley County Lady Colonels recorded their first win of the season in a big way, dominating McCreary Central during opening round action of the Class 2A, Section 7 Tournament on Tuesday with an 8-0 win.
Autumn Sawyers turned in a a stellar effort, scoring four goals, all in the first half, to lead Whitley County (1-3).
“I think we played really good. We came out strong,” Sawyers said. “I love my girls. I’ve played with the seniors since second grade. They’re always supporting me and supporting everyone. We have a really good bond, and we’re always lifting someone up when someone is down.”
The Lady Colonels built a 7-0 advantage in the game’s first 40 minutes and wrapped up the win a minute into the second half with a goal by Cali Nugent.
Norma Proffitt, Kaylee Hughes, Emily Jones, and Nugent each scored a goal apiece for Whitley County.
“The girls played a good game tonight,” Whitley County coach Michael Sawyers said. “We started out controlling the tempo of the game and were able to maintain possession the majority of the game. Our younger players played well tonight and are starting step up and fill the positions of our last year seniors.”
