LOG MOUNTAIN — What a night for the Whitley County Lady Colonel soccer team.
They captured the Class 2A, Section 7 championship by surviving a shootout with rival Corbin.
The game went into the shootout tied at two apiece before the Lady Colonels’ outscored the Lady Redhounds, 4-1, in the shootout to secure the 6-3 win.
Senior Autumn Sawyers also made school history during the win, becoming the career goal scorer by surpassing former Lady Colonel greatness Reis Anderson’s 126 goals. Sawyers scored three times in the win, and now has 129 on the season.
Kiera Mullins, Andrea Dee’s, and Norma Proffitt also scored a goal apiece in the win.
“Tonight was a real battle but when we play Corbin it always is,” Whitley County coach Michael Sawyers said. “I am real proud of the girls. We made mistakes that gave up goals but we continued to fight. They never gave up.
“Our goalie, Rheagan Strickland, made some amazing saves tonight and sealed the win for us during the shootout,” he added. “Another player that stepped up tonight was Kaylee Hughes at mid-field. She played the best game of her soccer career tonight. We have three games next week and head to Rowan County for the next round of the 2A on Saturday.”
