Cardinals rally early but surrender 20 unanswered points during loss to Russell County

JAMESTOWN — It wasn’t the outcome South Laurel faithful wanted during Friday’s game against Russell County.

The Cardinals spotted the Lakers a 13-0 lead before fighting back behind two touchdowns from Mason Griffin, but in the end, Russell County proved to be too much, pulling out a 33-13 victory.

The Lakers improved to 1-2 while South Laurel’s falls to 2-1.

“It was a very disappointing night for the Cardinals,” Hines said. “We are a very frustrated football team. We feel like we can play a whole lot better than we have shown in the first three outings. Don’t want to take anything away from Russell County, they’re a good football team and give them credit. But we are not playing up to our potential.

“We have get back to practice and go back to work and try to improve on a lot of things that we’re not doing well,” he added. “We had a good defensive effort, a lot of guys played well on special teams, and we had a few positive plays offensively, but not enough.”
