LOUISVILLE — A whirlwind of a week turned into an impressive 56-20 win over Waggener for Jerry Herron’s Williamsburg Yellow Jackets.
The Yellow Jackets hadn’t practiced since Tuesday, but still found a way to grind it out and win.
Williamsburg was supposed to host Waggener, but instead ended up traveling to Louisville instead, but the change of venues didn’t seem to matter as the Yellow Jackets rolled up more than 400 yards of total offense while improving to 2-1 during the process.
“It was huge for us getting off to a good start,” Herron said. “Really super-excited the way our kids played. Our kids battled the first half and took care of business. Really proud of these kids. This was a tough week and they just kept working hard. Kids believed in each other tonight and battled hard.”
Quarterback Nate Goodin threw three touchdown passes and ran for three scores in the win.
Williamsburg built a 14-6 lead in the first quarter and held a 34-14 advantage with a minute remaining in the first half.
Waggener responded with a touchdown right before halftime to take some momentum into the locker room only trailing, 34-20.
The Yellow Jackets responded with three touchdowns in the second half to cruise to their 36-point victory.
Herron’s squad has a bye week next Friday before getting back in action on the road Friday, Sept. 27 against North Greene, Tenn.
