MOREHEAD — The Whitley County Lady Colonels had hopes of bringing home a Kentucky 2A state championship but fell short during semi-state play on Saturday, losing to Estill County, 3-0.
The shut out marked only the second time this season Whitley County (4-4) has been held scoreless.
The Lady Colonels held their own throughout but the Lady Engineers scored three goals in the second half to pick up the win.
“We had a rough first half and we played very timid,” Qhitley County coach Michael Sawyers said. “We got out of the half with a 0-0 score. We came out stronger in the second half but some nagging injuries got the best of us.
“Our goalie Rheagan Strickland played another solid game,” he added. “Estill is a tough team our girls came out of this game with bruises and bloody lops, but played extremely hard the second half.”
Whitley County will be back in action Tuesday with a road game against Berea.
