Lady Cardinals overcome slow start, knock off Somerset in four sets

SOMERSET — South Laurel got back on the winning track Thursday with a 3-1 win over Somerset, improving to 7-15 during the process.

The Lady Cardinals overcame a slow start and put things together eventually to grab a big win on the road.

“We had a rocky start with some miscommunications and errors in the first set, but came out with a new energy in the second set,” South Laurel coach Shelly Nunley said. “Our back row really stepped up to recover a lot of balls, helping out our setters and hitters so that we could play a more aggressive game.

“Somerset is always a really active, scrappy team, so we came in knowing that they wouldn’t let a lot get by them,” she added. “I was really happy about how we continued volleys until we could eventually win out on difficult points with some smart attacks. All in all, we worked hard and earned a hard-fought win that we are really proud of.”
