LONDON — Kayla Bargo’s North Laurel Lady Jaguars wrapped up the 49th District’s top seed by scoring five unanswered goals during Saturday’s 5-1 win over crosstown rival South Laurel.
The Lady Jaguars’ record moves to 6-2 overall and 3-0 against 49th District competition. They have outscored their district opponents, 11-2, during the three games.
The loss dropped South Laurel to 3-7-1 overall and 0-3 against district opponents.
“When you play your crosstown rival, it always comes with extra nerves and pressure,” Bargo said. “That was evident at the beginning of the game. But after a slow start, we were able to settle in and take control of the game. It wasn’t our worst game or our best game but we got the job done. Now we move on to the last week of regular season where we hope to keep improving and making final adjustments needed to make a strong run into the post season.”
The Lady Cardinals got on track early, taking a 1-0 lead five minutes into the match thanks to a goal from Gracie Hoskins.
North Laurel responded two minutes later with a goal my McKinley Mastin and a goal by Annabelle Welch at the 30th minute to take a 2-1 lead into the break at halftime.
Haley Combs scored during the 50th minute to push the Lady Jaguars’ lead to 3-1 while Welch added a goal 10 minutes later, pushing North Laurel’s lead to 4-1.
Combs out the finishing touches on the Lady Jaguars’ win with a goal at the 70-minute mark.
