WILLIAMSBURG — Whitley County senior Autumn Sawyers continues to show why she is the front-runner to capture this season’s 13th Region Girls’ Soccer Player of the Year award by scoring four goals to lead the Lady Colonels to a 6-1 win over Casey County.
Sawyers now has a 13th Region-best 32 goals this season. The win improved Whitley County to 7-5 overall while Lady Colonels will now switch their focus to Thursday’s regular season home finale against Wayne County.
“It felt good to get back on our field tonight,” Whitley County coach Michael Sawyers said. “This was just the third home game we had this season. We started very slowly tonight but was able to pick it up after halftime. In the second half, we started possessing the ball more and moving it better, which resulted in us putting the ball in the net. Our defense played better in the second half and limited their shots on goal.”
Whitley County fell behind 1-0 in the 28th minute on Tuesday before scoring six unanswered goals.
Sawyers scored four goals (three coming in the second half). Her goal during the 35th minute tied the game at one apiece.she followed with goals in the 49th, 56th and 69th minutes.
Femke Haes scored during the 75th minute to give her team a 5-1 edge while Briliegh Logan put the finishing touches on the win.
