THREE-PEAT: SLMS Eighth Grade Lady Cardinals capture third consecutive state championship

LEXINGTON — The South Laurel Lady Cardinals eighth grade squad made it a clean sweep on Sunday, capturing their third consecutive HYPEHER Hoops Middle School State Championship.

The same group of girls also won the sixth and seventh grade championships the past two years as well.

Amy Jones’ squad ran the table, posting a 5-0 record while dominating throughout the tournament.

“I’m extremely proud of this team,” South Laurel coach Jones said. “Their effort and focus this weekend was exactly what it needed to be in order to win this tournament for a third year in a row.  They’ve achieved a remarkable amount of success during their time at SLMS, with only two losses over the three seasons. I’m so proud of each one of them for their persistent hard work, perseverance, and relentless desire to improve and compete.

“It’s been a honor and a joy to have been on this journey with them,” she added. “I look forward to watching their further development and success at the high school level.”

South Laurel won its first game, a 52-10 decision over Betsy Lane before rolling past McCreary County, 56-6.

The Lady Cardinals handed Clay County a 42-34 loss before defeating Lincoln County, 50-31, in the state semis.

South Laurel cruised past Taylor County in the title game, 31-12.

Members of the team are Khloe Osborne, McKenzie Fannin, Leah Smith, Lauren Wilkerson, McKenna Andes, Callie Jones, Ryleigh Bretz, Mia Hibbard, Jaylee Smith, Shelby Smith, Hallianna Massey, Alyssa Joseph, Kylee Woods, Coach Windlan, and Coach Jones.
