Third Time Is a Charm: Defending region champion Whitley County sweeps Corbin in three sets

WILLIAMSBURG — David Halcomb’s Whitley County Lady Colonels let it be known Monday the road to the 13th Region championship still leads through Whitley County.

The two-time defending 13th Region champion Lady Colonels stunned Corbin by sweeping the match in three sets, 25-22, 25-22, and 25-16.

“This was a big win for our team,” Halcomb said. “I have said all along that this team has tons of potential and it is starting to show. We have a very talented group and we’ve just tried to instill all kinds of confidence in them and they are now believing in themselves. 

“This is just one match and we are really excited to win this one for sure because a lot of folks didn’t they we could, but our staff and players did,” he added. “Can’t say enough about our girls tonight — played lights out and showed so much mental toughness. We had a great crowd too and I appreciate all those who came out to cheer us on. Go Colonels!”

The three-set loss turns out to be Corbin’s first against 13th Region and 50th District teams with both Whitley County and the Lady Redhounds now have identical 5-1 district records with Corbin winning the two teams’ first district match on Oct. 3, 3-2. The Lady Redhounds also defeated the Lady Colonels, 2-0, in the finals of the Class 2A, Section 7 finals on Aug. 31.

But things were different Monday.

Whitley County edged out Corbin in the first two sets with identical 25-22 scores before putting the match away with a 25-16 victory.

The Lady Colonels are now 20-7 while the Lady Redhounds fall to 23-6.
