REGION CHAMPS: Oneida Baptist’s second half rally leads to Mountaineers 2-1 win over North Laurel in 13th Region title game

LONDON — The Oneida Baptist Mountaineers are heading to the KHSAA State Soccer Tournament after unseating North Laurel as 13th Region champions by claiming a 2-1 victory in Tuesday’s 13th Region Boys’ Soccer Tournament title game.

The two teams had met twice during the season with the Jaguars picking up a 5-1 victory during regular season play while the Mountaineers returned the favor in the finals of last week’s 49th District Boys’ Soccer Tournament with a 3-0 victory.

North Laurel (10-5-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead during the 17th minute after a goal by Reilly Stuber, and held the one-goal edge at halftime.

The Jaguars’ lead didn’t last long in the second half as Hero Khajohnsupawatchara found the back of the net during the 42nd minute to tie the match at one apiece.

The game remained tied until Noah Jeon scored off a rebound to give Oneida Baptist (17-4) a 2-1 advantage with 24 minutes remaining.

The two teams locked into a defensive battle the remaining 24 minutes as the Mountaineers managed to hold on and get the win.
