LONDON — South Laurel had hopes of wrapping up its respective district’s No. 2 seed, but Southwestern had other plans.
The Cardinals dropped their 18th straight game to the Warriors while being shutout for the first time since Sept. 19, 2023, losing to Southwestern, 28-0.
South Laurel (5-3 overall, 2-2 vs. district opponents) just couldn’t get anything going offensively while Southwestern (4-4, 3-0) built a 21-0 lead in the first half and never looked back.
“It’s a very disappointing loss for the Cardinals tonight,” South Laurel coach John Hines said. “We didn’t execute very well. We didn’t play fundamental football very well.
“We have to get our heads up and get back to work next week to improve,” he added. “We can’t let this loss wreck our season. There’s too much potential here yet to achieve.”
The game was scoreless for a quarter until the Warriors’ Braxton Walters recorded a rushing touchdown.
Walters’ second rushing touchdown pushed his team’s lead to 14-0 while his third rushing touchdown gave his team a 21-0 cushion at halftime.
Elijah Ray put the finishing touches on the win with a rushing touchdown at the 5:09 mark of the fourth quarter.
The Cardinals’ next game isn’t scheduled until Nov. 1 at home against Harlan, according to the KHSAA website.
