LEXINGTON — North Laurel’s memorable run came to an end Wednesday, losing to Lexington Catholic, 8-0, during semifinal action of the KHSAA Girls’ State Tournament.
The Lady Jaguars (13-4) held their own, trailing only 2-0 at halftime before the Lady Knights (22-2-4) exploded for six goals in the second half.
The two teams played in front of 959 fans as Lexington Catholic took 32 shots with 22 of those on-goal.
Sara-Kate Barnes led the Lady Knights with five goals and one assist while Izzy Skinner had two goals and one assist and Emmie Peterson had a goal. Ansle Stephenson finished with an assist.
North Laurel struggled with possession the entire game. The Lady Jaguars finished with one shot (Haley Combs), but had no shots on goal. Keeper Brooklyn Mullins finished with 13 saves.
Lexington Catholic finished with eight corner kicks in the game while North Laurel had zero.
The Lady Knights outshot the Lady Jaguars, 23-1, in the first half and 9-0 in the second half.
The game was scoreless until the 23rd minute when Barnes scored Lexington Catholic’s first goal. She followed with another goal to finish the first half before her goal two minutes into the second half triggered a 6-0 run in six minutes.
Combs and Mullins were named to the All-State Tournament Team.
