Yellow Jackets finish regular season strong, capture sixth win in a row

WILLIAMSBURG — Jerry Herron’s Williamsburg Yellow Jackets closed out regular season play with a six-game win streak, picking up an impressive 28-12 win over Class 4A Perry Central.

The Yellow Jackets (7-1) captured their respective district’s top seed a few weeks ago, and will host Lynn Camp during first round action of the Class A playoffs on Friday.

“I thought we played really well on the offensive line and defensive line,” Herron said. “Defense played extremely hard controlled the line of scrimmage.”

After turning the ball over on its first possession, Williamsburg answered with a scoring drive on its second.

Nate Goodin found Eli Meadors open for a 24-yard touchdown score while the Yellow Jackets added the two-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead with 3:16 left in the first quarter.

Williamsburg pushed its lead to 14-0 in the third quarter thanks to an eight-yard quarterback keeper by Goodin with 7:45 left.

The Yellow Jackets began to pull away late in the third quarter as Peyton Tye forced a fumble, leading to teammate Isaiah Sizemore recovering the ball with 4:10 remaining in the third quarter.

Tye’s four-yard touchdown run combined with Chase Meddles adding the two-point conversion gave Williamsburg a 22-0 lead with 9:23 remaining in regulation.

Perry Central scored its first touchdown with 8:54 left thanks to a 15-yard pass while cutting its deficit to 22-6.

The Commodores added one final score, but Lane Jeffries touchdown run with three minutes remaining put the game out of reach.
