Two heavyweights met at South Laurel’s Gilliam Field on Thursday with the winner coming away with soul possession of first place in the 49th District.
Hannah Goins’ Corbin Lady Redhounds battled to the end and won, 4-3, after winning the battle of penalty kicks between the two teams.
The win improved Corbin to 10-3 overall, and 3-0 against 49th District opponents while South Laurel fell to 7-3 overall and 1-1 against district opponents.
Corbin struck first in the first half after both teams’ defenses dominated the first 25 minutes of the match.
Olivia Jones scored at the 26-minute mark to give her team an early 1-0 lead. Her goal work up the Lady Cardinals’ offensive attack as South Laurel followed with two goals.
Josie Gill’s goal tied the game at one apiece during the 34th minute while Gracie Hoskins found the back of the net during the 34th minute to give the Lady Cardinals a 2-1 advantage.
Corbin’s Kaiden Walden managed to score a goal right before the half to tie the match at two apiece entering halftime.
Lady Redhound senior Grace Gibson got into the scoring act three minutes into the second half to give her team a 3-2 edge.
South Laurel’s Ella Rison tied the match at three apiece during the 62nd minute as the two teams continued to battle in the pitch.
