WILLIAMSBURG — Early miscues combined with the arm and legs of Hazard quarterback Max Pelphrey proved to be too much for Williamsburg during Friday’s Class A, Second Round action.
The Yellow Jackets (8-2) dug themselves too big of a hole in the first half, falling behind 28-0, before falling to the Bulldogs, 56-18.
Pelphrey had three rushing touchdowns in the win while also throwing for three touchdowns in the air.
Turnovers set the tone early for both teams.
Hazard fumbled the ball on the opening kickoff as Williamsburg recovered, but the Yellow Jackets followed with a fumble of their own.
The Bulldogs recovered and eventually scored thanks to a touchdown run by Max Pelphrey to take an 8-0 lead with 8:09 left in the first quarter.
Pelphrey added 23-yard touchdown run four minutes later, pushing Hazard’s advantage to 14-0.
Things continued to get worse for Williamsburg as Pelphrey threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Connor Holbrook to make the score, 22-0, with eight seconds left in the first quarter.
Pelphrey threw another touchdown pass to Holbrook with 7:04 left in the second quarter, giving Hazard a 28-0 edge.
The Yellow Jackets finally got things going late in the first half as Nate Goodin capped off a long drive with an eight-yard quarterback keeper cut their deficit to 28-6 with 2:52 left in the first half.
Pelphrey added his third rushing touchdown with 9:53 left in the third quarter, giving Hazard a commanding 34-6 lead.
Reece Hatcher threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Goodin with eight minutes remaining in the game to make the score, 34-12.
Hazard added three more touchdowns during the final eight minutes to wrap-up the 38-point win.
