MIDDLESBORO — A 24-point scoring effort from Kylie Clem combined with Izzy Walker’s 15 points and Raegan Walker’s 11 points led to Corbin’s 64-47 win over Middlesboro on Tuesday.
The Lady Redhounds (1-0) knocked down eight 3-pointers with Izzy Walker and Raegan Walker hitting three apiece.
“Excited to get the season kicked off tonight,” Corbin coach Isaac Wilson said. “It was an unexpected start as we picked the game up today around 11 a.m., but we thought it was a great opportunity to begin the season and compete against somebody else. We have had a long stretch of practices and it was good to go against somebody else Tonight.
“Overall, I thought our team played really well and we were locked in defensively for the majority of the game,” he added. “We still have plenty of things that we need to cover and continue to improve on, but it is always great when you are able to begin your season with a win.
“Middlesboro has a nice young basketball team and they will continue to compete and be a problem within the 13th Region for this year and years to come,” Wilson continued. “Coach Adams is doing a great job with those girls and has really improved that Middlesborough program. We will enjoy this win for tonight, but we must reset our focus quickly as our next game is a home opener against Barbourville on Thursday night.”
Izzy Walker and Clem both had the hot-hand early, scoring 11 points apiece in the first quarter while helping Corbin to a 23-8 edge.
Keevi Betts scored seven of her team-best 23 points for Middlesboro in the second quarter while keeping her team within distance at halftime, trailing, 32-20.
